Digital Fingerprinting demystified in 2 questions and 1 minute of reading
What must you know about Digital Fingerprinting-based tracking technology?
Let me be crystal clear (under my interpretation of the ePrivacy Directive.
You must ask for consent if you track users with digital fingerprinting technology. Why?
What is Digital Fingerprinting tech?
Digital fingerprinting is like taking a picture of someone's computer or phone to see what device they're using and how they're using it. This can help websites and companies understand their users better and provide better services. However, just like you wouldn't want someone taking a picture of you without your permission, people don't want their devices to be "photographed" without their consent. That's why asking for permission before using digital fingerprinting or any other tool that collects information from someone's device is essential.
But,… if I take this photo anonymously? (good question)
Even if the digital fingerprinting is done anonymously, it still involves collecting information from the user's device, which can be considered an interference with the end-users terminal equipment. Therefore, it is still necessary to obtain the user's consent before using digital fingerprinting or any other tool that collects information from their device, even if the information is collected anonymously.
Let me remember: SEALmetrics doesn’t work with cookies or digital fingerprinting. We invested a lot of money interviewing lawyers and privacy specialists around Europe before developing a single line of code.
